The Perfect Cold Brew Coffee Recipe: Smooth, Refreshing, and Easy to Make

There's something special about cold brew coffee. It's smooth, naturally sweet, and incredibly refreshing—making it the perfect companion for warm mornings, sunny afternoons, or whenever you need a delicious caffeine boost.

Unlike traditional iced coffee, which is brewed hot and then cooled, cold brew is steeped slowly in cold water. This process extracts rich flavors while reducing acidity, resulting in a mellow, full-bodied cup that's easy to enjoy black or with your favorite milk.

At Kopikoa Coffee Co., we believe great coffee deserves great brewing methods. Here's our favorite recipe for creating café-quality cold brew at home.

Why Cold Brew?

Cold brewing highlights the natural sweetness of coffee while minimizing bitterness. Because the coffee is never exposed to hot water during extraction, the finished brew has a smooth, chocolatey flavor with a velvety finish.

Benefits of cold brew include:

  • Naturally lower acidity than hot brewed coffee
  • Smooth, rich flavor
  • Less bitterness
  • Perfect for serving over ice
  • Easy to prepare in advance
  • Keeps fresh in the refrigerator for up to a week

Whether you're relaxing by the beach or getting ready for a busy workday, cold brew offers a refreshing way to enjoy premium coffee.

Kopikoa Signature Cold Brew Recipe

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces (340 g) coarsely ground coffee
  • 64 ounces (1.9 L) cold, filtered water

This creates a rich cold brew concentrate that can be diluted to your preferred strength.

Equipment

  • Large glass jar or cold brew pitcher
  • Wooden spoon
  • Fine mesh strainer
  • Cheesecloth or paper coffee filter
  • Glass bottle or airtight container for storage

Step 1: Grind Your Coffee

For the best results, use a coarse grind—similar in size to raw sugar or coarse sea salt. A coarse grind helps prevent over-extraction and makes filtering much easier.

Freshly roasted beans produce the most flavorful cold brew. Medium and medium-dark roasts are especially delicious, offering notes of chocolate, caramel, roasted nuts, and brown sugar.

Step 2: Combine Coffee and Water

Place the ground coffee into your brewing vessel.

Slowly pour in the filtered water, making sure all the grounds become evenly saturated.

Stir gently for about 20 to 30 seconds.

Step 3: Let It Steep

Cover the container and allow the coffee to steep.

  • 16–18 hours at room temperature for a richer, fuller body
  • 18–24 hours in the refrigerator for a cleaner, brighter flavor

Patience is key—the slow extraction is what gives cold brew its signature smoothness.

Step 4: Filter

Pour the coffee through a fine mesh strainer to remove the larger grounds.

Then filter it a second time using cheesecloth or a paper coffee filter. This extra step creates an exceptionally clean and silky cup.

Transfer the concentrate to a sealed bottle and refrigerate.

How to Serve

Because this recipe produces a concentrate, dilute it before drinking.
